When TBRI is applied, caregivers spend less time stressfully putting out fires and more time joyfully engaging their children.

TBRI = Trust-Based Relational Intervention

Based on years of research by Dr. Karyn Purvis, Dr. David Cross and their colleagues at Texas Christian University, TBRI is an evidence-based, trauma-informed intervention.

This attachment-rich intervention is designed to meet the unique needs of children who have experienced trauma. Connection is the heart of TBRI. When children feel safe and know they have a voice, their survival behaviors: including lying, stealing and anger outbursts, are diminished.

When TBRI is applied, caregivers spend less time stressfully putting out fires and more time joyfully engaging their children. As a result, these children who desperately needed a sense of self worth, begin to discover their value.

While TBRI was designed for vulnerable children, parents often find this to be the best parenting philosophy for all children.

  • What is TBRI®?

    What is TBRI®? We are pleased to present a new video resource that answers that very question. It is our hope that the TBRI Animate will inspire parents and professionals across the world to bring deep healing to vulnerable children.

  • Attachment Styles

    Young children use their attachment figure as a secure base for exploring understanding the world around them. The relationship between child and caregiver lays the groundwork for interpersonal connections throughout the lifespan. When attachment is derailed, children may display confusing behaviors and struggle to trust even loving, safe caregivers. Although this is a sobering reality, there is hope for these children.

  • IDEAL Response

    When a child from a hard place doesn't feel safe, the result is often behaviors that appear willful, baffling, and infuriating to caregivers. How we respond is critical.

    Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) has developed a guideline to help. Watch as we walk through the IDEAL Response© for dealing with behaviors and building connection between the child and caregiver.

  • Toxic Stress & the Brain

    From the time we are born, our brains have 100 billion neurons and begin to form synaptic connections that make up who we are and how we function. Tragically, severe or prolonged abuse or neglect manifests in toxic stress which derails brain development and can even affect the immune system. This cycle is all too common for children from hard places of abuse, neglect, and/or trauma.

  • Human Trafficking

    Over the past twenty years, our institute has seen TBRI®, applied across various communities of care and practice. Through a partnership with the Office of the Texas Governor Child Sex Trafficking Team, our Institute is currently involved in a statewide project focused on implementing TBRI with professionals who support survivors of sex-trafficking and other forms of commercial sexual exploitation.
